Thrive Africa Plant-Powered Holidays

AN ONLINE EVENT: #ThriveAfricaPlantPoweredHolidays!

Happy holidays with an African plant-powered twist! Showcasing African flavor, culture, and sustainability this holiday season.

The Thrive Africa Plant-Powered Holidays is a pan-Africa-wide plant-based campaign coordinated by the Thrive Africa Vegan Women’s Initiative with members across multiple African countries.

Thrive Africa Plant-Powered Holidays highlights the importance of plant-based diets deeply rooted in African traditions, flavors, and heritage. Running from 15th November to January 3, 2025, Africa vegan women advocates from across the continent are joining hands to promote a festive season centered on health, sustainability, and cultural pride, while building their leadership and advocacy skills in this pilot campaign.

Celebrate the holidays with a purpose and join us as we reshape the narrative around plant-based living in Africa, celebrating our culinary diversity and fostering a healthier future for people, animals, and the planet.

The Plant-Powered Holiday Campaign was founded and is led by Kenya-based Thrive Africa Co-Manager, Virginia Ruguru. Please send inquiries to virginia.ruguru@thrivephilanthropy.org

THE WHY

The Thrive Africa Plant-Powered Holidays campaign encourages nutritious, plant-based, climate-friendly, and animal-friendly food choices during the holiday season, while empowering women-identified advocates with campaign development skills.

Traditionally, December has seen a rise in animal slaughter across Africa, as noted in Business Daily Africa (Dec 19, 2020), sparking calls for more humane, plant-based dietary options.

MORE THAN JUST A CAMPAIGN
Thrive Africa Plant-Powered Holidays campaign is more than just a campaign- it’s a project of the Thrive Africa Vegan Women’s Initiative members and a movement that celebrates African culture while promoting health, sustainability, and community women-led leadership.

WHY THIS INITIATIVE IS SIGNIFICANT TO AFRICA

  • Promoting Sustainability and Food Justice: Embracing a plant-powered holiday season reduces our environmental impact and increases access to affordable, healthy, local foods, promoting a future where both people and the planet thrive.

  • Empowering Women Leaders: Through this campaign, women advocates across Africa are gaining the skills to lead health, sustainability, and food advocacy efforts in their communities.

  • Preserving African Heritage: Our campaign honors the diversity of African traditions and flavors, demonstrating that plant-based living can align with our cultural values.
