Food Systems Approach to
Vegan Advocacy
Thrive Philanthropy is partnering with Dr. Rachel Mason, PhD, Thrive Global Advisory Committee member, to offer a special Food Systems Approach to Vegan Advocacy workshop.
Description
Factory farming is an end-to-end system, driven by the profit motive and embedded in a culture that supports and legitimizes it.
Thinking about the “big picture” like this can be daunting, but it also helps to illuminate the many ways in which we can intervene in the system, and it invites us to consider how we might collaborate, coordinate, and strategize for maximum effect.
In this special workshop, Dr. Rachel Mason will describe a framework for understanding factory farming and industrial food animal production as the “food system” it really is, and outline steps towards a world in which advocates strategically deploy multiple interventions to displace industrial animal agriculture, replacing it with ethical and sustainable plant-based alternatives.
This 1-hour workshop is a must for anyone working in plant-based food systems spaces. Free and open to the public.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
DR. RACHEL MASON
Dr. Rachel Mason is a broadly-trained scientist with expertise in agriculture, data science, and systems thinking. Following a PhD in Astronomy and several years as an astronomer at some of the world’s leading observatories, she found herself increasingly preoccupied with problems on our own planet. She changed fields via an MS in Plant & Soil Science, focusing on sustainable agriculture and the food system. Since then, Dr Mason has published research into the environmental impacts of animal agriculture; changes in the global nitrogen cycle; using machine learning to interpret remote sensing images; and how the field of agroecology has changed over time. Dr Mason currently works as an independent researcher, specializing in complex, discipline-spanning problems related to food, agriculture, and animals. Dr. Mason can be reached here.
